Introductory Letter

from Father Walsh:

Dear St. Cecilia Parishioner:

Jesus, our Savior, demonstrates His love for us in many ways, among them by healing those burdened by sickness in body, mind and spirit (see Luke, 7.21-22). He commanded us to love others as He loves us. This we do through the goodness and love we share with one another and especially by our compassion for those among us who are suffering.

Our September 2013 parish health survey identified significant health and wellness needs in our community and the Task Force that formed and studied these issues recommended to our Parish Council that we establish a health ministry in our parish. The Parish Council gave approval for the project in January 2014 and I formally launched the initiative in February 2014 by hiring Susan Ferrone to coordinate the planning process.

A Health Ministry Planning Committee was formed and met during the past three months to develop mission and vision statements for the ministry and to recommend programs and services to carry out the mission. The mission statement was formally approved by our Planning Committee on April 21, and will be presented to the Parish Council for their review and input at the April 29 meeting.

We know what Health Ministry at St. Cecilia is NOT. It is not a replacement for the health care industry. Nor will it replace health care providers. It will not become a health insurance program. It will not eliminate the need for people to see their health care providers, take  medication, or continue any health care regimen prescribed by a health care professional.

Parish Health Ministry at St. Cecilia will promote health and wellness in body, mind and spirit. Our Health Ministry will help link people who are sick with fellow parishioners so that we can pray for them, visit them, and sustain them in their suffering. This ministry will offer programs that encourage healthy living and be a resource of spiritual information and support for those who are suffering. Parish Health Ministry will help us connect with one another, so that together, we can grow in our identity as a parish family and in our unity as the family of God.

Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest, says the Lord. We are the hands, the voice, the heart of the Lord through which He keeps that promise to us today. This is the reason we created a Parish Health Ministry at St. Cecilia and the work this ministry will undertake among us.

May God bless our efforts and all of us!
